4-H Club Hat Etiquette

Some clubs award stripes for each year a member is enrolled in 4-H. Those clubs annually order their stripes from Leslie Carman 4-H Club Supplies, P.O. Box 2416, Redondo Beach, CA 90278 (phone number: (310) 374-1019). The green hat (through 8th grade) and white hat (9th grade and older) may also be ordered through Leslie Carman. Bronze, Silver, & Gold stars are
available through the 4-H Office.

Stripes:

White Stripe on green background - members through 8th grade
Green Stripe on white background - members 9th grade and older

Leadership stripes:

Jr. Leaders (6-8th grades) - gold stripe on green background
Teen Leaders (9th - 12th grades) - gold stripe on white background

All members enrolled in the Jr./Teen Leadership project may wear (at the start of the current project year) a Leadership Patch.

Jr. Leader Patch - To become a junior leader, youth must be in grades 6-8, or if home-schooled, must be at least 11 and no more than 13 years old as of January 1 of the program year.
Teen leader Patch - To become a teen leader, youth must be in the ninth grade or above, or if home-schooled, must be at least 14 years old as of January 1 of the program year.

STARS, STRIPES, AND MEDALS:

LEFT SIDE: All-Star, Gold, Silver, or Bronze stars are worn here. Members are to wear only one star at a time on their 4-H hat. Do not overlap the Silver star over the Bronze star or the Gold star over the Silver star. Next to the stars are placed the Hi 4-H and Junior or Teen Leader emblem. These emblems are worn only while the member is serving as a Junior or Teen Leader.

RIGHT SIDE: As described above, year stripes and year pins are earned for each year completed in 4-H. These stripes and pins are awarded through the local club. Some year pins are still provided by the Thomas and Dorothy Leavy Foundation and supplied through the 4-H Office.

EITHER SIDE: Medals may be worn on either side of the hat. No other pin or ribbon should be worn on the hat. The hat should reflect the dignity of the 4-H Youth program.
