Insurance & Liability Information for Adult Volunteers

A UCCE Volunteer in Ventura County is anyone 21 years of age or older who, on an unpaid basis, agrees to provide a service or conduct an activity that supports the goal of a UCCE sponsored program.

A Formal UCCE Volunteer is one who is specifically recruited, oriented, trained, and certified as part of an organized ANR Volunteer Program designed to achieve specific programmatic objectives.  Please visit http://www.ca4h.org/4hresource/forms/manuals/Project-Leader-Digest.pdf for more information.

The University of California Division of Agriculture & Natural Resources Cooperative Extension (UCCE) provides general and automobile liability insurance through self-insurance programs for its employees and formal volunteers.   Formal Volunteers, in their official capacity, are provided general and automobile liability insurance under the University self insurance program. Coverage for formal volunteers is provided for activities that are scheduled, sponsored and supervised while acting within the course and scope of their UCCE duties. Please visit http://www.ca4h.org/4hresource/handbook/HTML/Handbook600.01a.asp#Section605 for more information.

Check with your local County's UC Cooperative Extension Office (645-1470) if you have questions about this information.

General Liability

The UC insurance program provides liability coverage against third party suits and claims for volunteers. Coverage is provided for the supervision of people and general supervision of UCCE sponsored programmatic activity. There are some exceptions and limitations which are determined on a case-by-case basis through investigation. Please visit http://www.ca4h.org/4hresource/handbook/HTML/Handbook600.01a.asp#Section606_1 for more information.

Personal Property

The insurance program does not provide coverage for any personal or real property not within its care, custody and control.
As an example, no coverage is provided for ownership of and use of an animal in a project.
Additionally, no coverage is provided for using one's home, ranch, garden or arena for a program activity.

Volunteers should check with their insurance carriers and review their liability coverage before assuming the risks involved in using their personal property for UCCE programs.

Workers' Compensation

UCCE does not provide Workers' Compensation insurance coverage for UC volunteers.

Personal Vehicles

The University insurance program provides secondary automobile liability coverage while driving during the course and scope of official UCCE business activities. Your personal automobile insurance is primary.  Please see http://www.ca4h.org/4hresource/handbook/HTML/Handbook600.01a.asp#Section605_1 for more information
